CLA – health benefits/health promoting properties
Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2013, Vol 19, Issue 4
Abstract
CLA is the only fatty acid existing in nature (in milk and milk products) which has trance configuration. The CLA name includes 56 positional and geometrical isomers of linoleic acid. Nowadays, on the market of supplements, the most popular are supplements containing linoleic acid due to its „slimming down” potential action which takes place through the number of mechanisms, such as: inhibition of lipoprotein lipase, a thermogenic and anticatabolic effect. A positive effect on the cardiovascular system and anticarcinogenic effect are also attributed to CLA. Findings of conducted research on positive and negative effects of CLA are quite divergent; therefore further research is essential in these directions. The objective of this study is to present the current knowledge of the conjugated linoleic acid and a review of slimming supplements which contain CLA.Previous studies do not provide conclusive, studies in animals have shown that CLA has a significant effect on fat oxidation in skeletal muscle, and induces a reduction of fat which, however, is not confirmed by clinical trials.CLA supplementation is relatively safe and does not induce clinically significant changes; there are divergent test results on the effects of CLA on the regulation of insulin and glucose in the blood, for this reason, patients with type II diabetes should take special caution with supplements containing conjugated linoleic acid.Key wordsCLA, obesity, supplements
