Clinical And Etiological Evaluation Of Sinus Thrombosis

Abstract
Ten patients (7 female, 3 male) were evaluated between 2001January -2005 March in our clinic. Mean age was 35 (range: 23-70). Initial complaint was headache in 8 patients. Loss of consciousness and visual loss were complaints of others. Duration of symptom progress is mean 7 days (range: 2-30 days). Epileptic seizure was associated with symptoms in 4 patients. Pregnancy or peripartal period involvement in three. Non of them was hypertensive. Regression in consciousness was observed in four. Papillary edema was present bilaterally in 6 patients. Cranial Computed Tomography revealed mild generalized edema in 4 patients. Magnetic Resonance Imaging showed various sinus involvement in all of the patients. Patients with seizure had abnormal EEG findings. One except (with AVM) all of the patients were treated with anticoagulants (mainly low molecular weighted heparin). During clinical follow up, two patients showed worse progression and they died with pulmonary complication and status epilepticus. Etiological, clinical and laboratory features of our patients were reviewed in the light of the literature.
