Clinical profile of patients with inguinal hernia and benign prostatic enlargement: A descriptive study from rural Maharashtra

Abstract

Background: In elderly age group we come across benign enlargement of prostate, leading to chronic straining during micturition causing increased intra abdominal pressure leading to weakness in the inguinal musculature consequently leading to inguinal hernia. The incidence of inguinal hernia also increases with age. Objective: To study the clinical profile of patients with hernia and benign prostatic hypertrophy Methodology: Descriptive observational study conducted by involving 100 patients male patients aged greater than 50 years attending Out Patient Department (OPD) and admitted in surgery ward in study institute. Results: 50% were from 61-70 years of age group. 58% of the hernias were direct type and 42% were indirect type. 28% had moderate type of prostatic enlargement and only 4% had severe nlargement. Increased frequency observed in 78%, dribbling urination in 47%, burning micturition in 41%, nocturia (35%) and pain in abdomen in 13%.
