Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Surgery - Year 2019, Vol 9, Issue 3

Abstract

Background: Salivary gland is an exocrine gland present in the oral cavity. It helps in maintaining PH, Digestion, protective barrier by secreting saliva. Major salivary glands in the oral cavity are parotid, Submandibular, Sublingual salivary gland. tumours originating from these glands are rare. Tumours arising from salivary have various anatomical, histological and pathological entity. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the Histopathological, biological process which occurs in the salivary gland Materials and Methods: 35 patients with salivary gland swelling admitted in the surgical ward in tertiary care centre from the period starting from march 2018 to February 2019. After obtaining consent from the patient in his /her language in written format. clinical examination was done. Blood investigations are done, ECG, Chest X Ray are also done. Fine needle aspiration and cytology (FNAC) was done. After confirming the diagnosis. surgery was done accordingly to the cause, site and involvement of the anatomical structure. Later specimen was sent for Histopathogical examination. Results: Total of 35 patients with salivary gland swelling were included in this study. The mean age of the study participants was observed to be 40.3±13.4 years. Majority of the participants are Females (62.9%). Maximum participants swelling of the salivary gland ranging from one month to one year is 15 (42.9%) . participants associated with pain is 5 ( 14.3%). Patient associated with Fever is 6 (17.1%). Patients with rapid growth in study group is 6(17.1%). Left submandibular was observed to be the most commonly involved gland 15(42.9%), followed by right submandibular gland 8 patients (22.9%). Participants with raised ear lobe is 6 (17.1%). Most of the participants are presented with normal duct opening 31 patients(88.6%) .Only 4 patients(11.4%) are presented with congential anomalies. Deep lobe involvement was observed in one patient(2.9%) with right parotid involvement. Among these patients 4 cases were Malignant and 31 cases were benign. Conclusion: salivary gland tumour are rare mostly present in a heterogenous group. This study evident that Pleomorphic adenoma is the most commonest benign tumour among salivary gland tumour mostly originated from parotid salivary gland. Most commonest malignant tumour is mucoepidermoid tumour
