Comparative study on post operative complication between mini laparotomy cholecystectomy and standard conventional open cholecystectomy
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Surgery - Year 2018, Vol 6, Issue 2
Abstract
Background: Surgical procedures like open cholecystectomy (OC) and mini-laparotomy cholecystectomy (MLC) are used for the management of cholelithiasis. Objective: Objective of present work was to compare post operative complication between mini laparotomy cholecystectomy and standard conventional open cholecystectomy in patients suffering from cholelithiasis. Methods: This is a comparative study of 60 patients, evaluated for gall stone. All the 60 patients were separated in to two groups as per the method of surgery such as OC operated and MLC. Results: The mean operating time was 131.6 minutes for OC and 65.66 minutes for MLC. Patients with OC experienced more pain and surgical stress and showed delayed recovery as compared to MLC. The average treatment days of antibiotic and analgesic were 8.26 and 7 days respectively for OC, whereas it was 3.03 days of antibiotic and 4.33 days of analgesic in MLC operated patients. Post operative complications such as wound infection, fever, and vomiting were less in MLC operated patients compared to OC patients. Conclusions: The outcomes of our study suggested mini laparoscopic cholecystectomy is superior to open cholecystectomy due to shorter operative time, fast recovery with lesser dosage regimens of both antibiotics and analgesics. The patients undergoing MLC also experienced less pain as compared to OC patients.
