Effect of alcohol ban on road traffic accidents in national highways near Belgavi

Abstract

Background: Road traffic accidents are one of the major cause of death in developing countries like INDIA. Most of the road traffic accidents occur under the influence of alcohol. Most of the victims are teen aged boys. Drinking and driving is already a serious public health problem, which is likely to emerge as one of the most significant problems in the near future. The role of alcohol in traffic safety has produced more controversies than any other topic. Alcohol and driving don't mix, but still, many people love to drink and drive resulting in numerous road mishaps. A drunken driver is a potential murderer as he cannot perform his tasks without risks and endangers road safety. It is important to initiate necessary steps to achieve this by overcoming all the challenges. With the implementation of alcohol ban in national highways within 500meters has decreased many road traffic accidents. Aim: To analyse the effect of alcohol ban in national highways on road traffic accidents near Belgavi Methods: This is a retrospective record based study conducted In Belgavi Institute Of Medical, Belagavi in surgery department from February 2016 to February 2018. Patients brought to the casualty with history of road traffic accidents under the influence of alcohol in trauma ward in surgery department. patients were initially given primary treatment and resucsited. Results: Road traffic accident are more common in young boys and 20-30 years patients. Most of the patients had suffered severe head injuries with multiple vault and facial bone fractures. As compared 2016-17 (pre ban) numbers of cases of road traffic accidents had come down in 2017-18 (post ban). But there not much drastic change was seen but considerable changes have been seen which praiseworthy. More no of deaths seen in first 6 hours in both the groups. Most of the patients had multiple injuries ENT, Orthopedic, maxillofacial injuries. Conclusion: Alcohol ban has reduced the incidence of road traffic accidents and mortality. More no of cases were seen in young boys. alcohol ban has shown good results in terms of decreased incidence of road traffic accidents in youth.
