Clinical study and surgical management of acute intestinal obstruction in adults

Abstract
Background: Intestinal obstruction is a common surgical emergency all over the world that accounts for at least 20% of all admissions to a surgical service. Objective: The objective of this study is to identify the cause, mode of presentation, various modalities of treatment and out come with least complications of acute intestinal obstruction. Materials and Methods: 70 patients who were admitted in the surgical ward with diagnosis of acute intestinal obstruction in NIMS Medical College and Hospital over a period of one and a half years i.e. from Jan 2016–june 2017 were taken randomly and managed. Among these 41 were males and 9 were females. Results: In this study, 43 (61.4%) cases were male while 27 (38.6%), were female giving a male female ratio of 4.3:2.7 which showed a male preponderance. All cases are of mechanical obstruction. Mechanical SBO was the commonest type, 42(60%), followed by mechanical LBO, 18 (25.7%), while mechanical SBO/LBO was found in, 10 (14.3%). The main cause of intestinal obstruction at National Institute of Medical Science and Research is due to adhesions and bands, 45.7%, mainly associated with previous laparatomies. Conclusion: The main cause of intestinal obstruction is adhesions from previous surgeries, followed by strangulated hernias and neoplasms.
