Clinicopathological study of 29 cases of testicular lesions in children - A panicky situation

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 5, Issue 1

Abstract

Background: Inguino-scrotal swellings in children are common with varying causes .They can be hernia, hydrocele to testicular tumours. Objective: The objective of the study is to know the pathology in the orchidectomy specimens and excision biopsies from children. Materials and Methods: It is a retrospective clinicopathological study of 21 cases of orchidectomies and 8 cases of incision biopsies from the testis of children received from private hospitals. Results: The most common pathology of the testicular lesion was vanishing testicular syndrome (13 cases) with age range of 4 months to 15 year; undescended testis formed the next common group (8 cases) with age ranging from 15 months to 15 year. There were 7 cases of torsion testis (one in a inguinal undescended testis), the age range of which was 3 years to 15 years and pathology ranged from infantile viable testis with haemorrhage to complete haemorrhagic necrosis. There was one case of filarial epididymitis (8year old) and paratesticular mature teratoma in a 15 year old child. Conclusion: In children non- neoplastic testicular lesions are more common than neoplastic lesions leading to orchidectomy. In this study vanishing testicular syndrome was the most common cause of orchidectomy. Torsion testis is usually diagnosed clinically, but the pathology dependent on the interval between the onset of torsion and surgery. Mass in the scrotum can be neoplastic or non-neoplastic as in this study having a case each of filarial epididymis and benign teratoma.
