COMMUNE AS A PRIMARY TERRITORIAL COLLECTIVE IN THE LOCAL SELF-GOVERNMENT SYSTEM OF THE FRENCH REPUBLIC

Abstract
The article contains a theoretical study of the commune as the primary territorial group in France. The analysis of the signs of the commune, its population, number, territory, name is carried out. The historical sources and causes of the process of unification of communes, its legal mechanism, as well as the reasons for its insignificance in today's France are revealed.
