COMMUNICATIVE AND COGNITIVE APPROACH TO THE FORMATION OF STUDENTS’ INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCE AT THE ENGLISH LESSONS

Abstract

The entry of Ukraine into the world community provides for the expansion of international cultural and business relations of Ukrainians with representatives of other countries. In this concern, the study of English as a means of developing intercultural communicative skills is of particular significance, which is especially important for future teachers of a foreign language, since they must not only teach English to students, but also introduce the diversity of the world cultures to them. The aim of the article is to study the role and possibilities of a communicative and cognitive approach in the formation of the intercultural competence of future teachers of a foreign language in the process of their professional training. It is determined that the cognitive component of this approach is aimed at students’ mastering of general cultural knowledge, promoting understanding of cultural values ‒ those of different countries, native and foreign culture as well as what makes a certain culture unique. The use of the communicative aspect ensures the approximation of the educational process at the English lessons to the profession-oriented and life situations of foreign speaking communication, promotes the students’ mastering of grammatical skills in reading or listening by implementing these types of speech activity in the learning process under conditions simulating real communication situations. It is assumed that the organization of teaching on the basis of the communicative and cognitive approach will contribute not only into the deepening of their knowledge of English, but it will also facilitate acquiring skills and abilities of intercultural communication by future teachers, that is, the formation of their intercultural competence. The intercultural competence is considered as an integrative personality trait, characterized by the ability to organize productive foreign language communication, awareness of the organization peculiarities of intercultural interaction with representatives of different cultures in the process of studying a foreign language, alongside with the ability to resolve constructively conflict situations through interactive strategies. Some examples of practical lessons aimed at the formation of the intercultural competence of the future teachers of a foreign language in the framework of the educational discipline «Practice of oral and written speech» are given. They provide using role games, video materials (extracts from documentaries, feature films, television programs and news in English), reflecting the problems of intercultural communication in various countries. In conclusion, we may claim that the organization of teaching at the English lessons on the basis of the communicative and cognitive approach stimulates the formation of skills and abilities within foreign language intercultural communication performed by the future teachers of a foreign language, activates their speech and thinking activities, develops cognitive and communicative abilities, the ability to communicate in a foreign language in various situations, that is, they contribute to the formation of their intercultural competence.
