Comparative Phraseological Units in English-Ukrainian Translation of Fiction.
Journal Title: Львівський філологічний часопис - Year 2018, Vol 3, Issue
Abstract
Comparisons are widely used in literary works of many authors, thus constituting an exceptional flavor of a literary work. The article aims to highlight procedures, techniques, methods, strategies and tactics that prove useful to faithfully reproduce English comparative phraseological units in Ukrainian translations. Comprehensive research devoted to these comparative phrases (English in particular) through the prism of translation studies has not been done yet. Some of the aspects of comparativeness in terms of translation were studied by S. V. Altukhova, L. Yu. Nazarenko, V. S. Vinogradov, К. Mizin, R. Zorivchak. We have chosen modern English literary prose as the material of the investigation. Applying continuous sampling, we selected comparative phraseological units in English from 2119 pages of printed text. Total samples in English included 23 comparative phraseological units. Comparative phraseological units are subdivided into two groups – traditional comparisons and those invented by the author himself/ herself. A translator has to deal with the two groups, especially while translating literary works. Traditional comparative phraseological units seem to be easier to translate into the target language; however they are characterized by specific features hindering the translation process. Scholars define two ways of comparative phraseological units translation – phraseological and non-phraseological. Normally translators are in a constant search for correspondences from vast resources of the Ukrainian language. The research done shows a wide range of procedures, methods and techniques applied by the Ukrainian translators in rendering English comparative phraseological units (calque, translation by analogy, lexical translation and omission).
