Comparative Study between Clinical Findings and Ct Findings in 25 Cases of Acute Pancreatitis

Journal Title: International Journal Of Research In Medicine - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 4

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Acute pancreatitis is a one of the commonest conditions presenting as acute abdomen. An analytical study of 25 patients was undertaken to compare clinical and radiological findings and their role in predicting disease outcome and severity was assessed. After studying the cases it was found that ct findings do not provide additional advantage in diagnosis and severity grading; henceTherefore, obtaining a CT for assessment of severity on the day of admission is not recommended. Instead, from a resource utilization perspective and as a way of reducing radiation exposure in Acute Pancreatitis, when the diagnosis has been made on clinical grounds (abdominal pain and elevated serum amylase and / or lipase), severity and prognosis can initially be assessed by clinical scoring system with imaging reserved in cases where the diagnosis is equivocal, in patients who have predicted severe Acute Pancreatitis by clinical assessment or who fail to improve clinically despite conservative therapy or when a lifethreatening complication is suspected.
