Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2013, Vol 66, Issue 1
Abstract
The emotional intelligence level (EQ) has an impact on professional success. A higher level of EQ helps maintain a proper doctor-patient relationship, which positively affects the entire process of the therapy. The aim of the study was to compare the emotional intelligence level of dental students at the Faculty of Medicine of Jagiellonian University Medical College (UJCM) and students of other faculties in Cracow. This study included students of 3rd and 4th year of dentistry at UJCM, 3rd and 5th year of medicine at UJCM, and 4th year Faculty of Tourism and Recreation at Academy of Physical Education in Cracow – a total of 167 people aged 21 to 28 years. The research tool used was the Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (INTE) adapted to Polish conditions by Jaworowska & Matczak. The mean score of EQ level obtained in the study was 125.2 points of 165 possible. 15.0% of all respondents presented low, 69.5% mean and 15.5 high EQ level. The analysis revealed no relationship between students’ EQ level and the field of study (p=0.1286). There were no statistically significant gender differences in the questionnaire INTE score (p=0.7788). In view of the low percentage of people who present a high EQ level, it is worth considering the implementation of activities that would develop emotional intelligence.
