Comparison of genetic gain from single-stage and two-stage selection in an open nucleus breeding scheme
Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 9, Issue 1
Abstract
In order to compare genetic gain resulted from one-stage and two-stage selection in a nucleus breeding program, information of age structure of ewes and rams, reproductively and mortality of the native sheep population in Guilan province, Iran collected in 2013 deterministic simulation model was used. The simulation of breeding systems was performed by Matlab software. Weaning weight was formed the objective function in this study. When the nucleus was closed, genetic growth was 0.2278 kg per year which was lower than that of the open nucleus. In the open nucleus program and one-stage selection, the genetic gain was 0.2527 kg and in two-stage selection that was 0.2536 kg per year, indicating the advantage of two-stage selection over one-stage selection. Investigating the optimal structure of program in one and two-stage selection indicated that supplying 25 percent of the nucleus females by base herd and 50 percent of base males by nucleus herd created the highest annual genetic gain in the objective function, indicating the independence of optimal structure from the kind of selection.
