COMPARISON OF TRADITIONAL PRACTICAL EXAMINATION (TPE) AND OBJECTIVE STRUCTURED PRACTICAL EVALUATION (OSPE)

Journal Title: International Journal of Basic and Applied Physiology - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 1

Abstract

BACKGROUND: OSPE in the students, tests what they can do rather than what they know. OSPE is now believed to meet the deficiencies of the traditional system of practical examination. AIM: Comparison of traditional practical examination (TPE) & objective structured practical evaluation (OSPE) in regular & irregular students. METHODS: A total of 150 student were divided into 3 practical batches (A, B and C), each consisting of 50 students. OSPE & TPE were scheduled for 3 consecutive days and conducted conveniently for a period of 4 hours each day by further dividing them into 3 sub-batches each consisting of about 17 students. RESULTS: In OSPE, regular students and irregular students secured 28.62 ± 4.52 marks, 19.16 ± 6.87 marks respectively. Irregular students scored 33.1% marks less than regular students. The difference is statistically significant (p<0.0001). In TPE, regular students and irregular students secured 31.33 ± 4.14 marks, 23.05 ± 6.64 marks respectively. Irregular students scored 27% marks less than regular students (p<0.0001). CONCLUSION: The lower score of OSPE as compared to TPE in both type of students, indicates the need for practice in routine practical classes. OSPE may not only improve the quality of student’s performance in the laboratory exercise but also prepare the students to become good clinicians.
