COMPUTATIONAL ANALYSIS OF SELECTED SUPPLY DESIGNS IN HYDRODYNAMIC THRUST BEARINGS

Abstract

Hydrodynamic thrust bearings have considerable power losses, and in modern designs lubricated oil is cooled in external systems. After cooling, oil is introduced back into the bearing housing, usually to the space between the pads. Efficiency of supplying cooled oil to the vicinity of the inlet to the fluid film has an influence on bearing temperature and load capacity. In practice, one can see a variety of different supply methods, but there is a lack of research on their efficiency in published literature. Moreover, it seems that, up till now, detailed analysis of the flow of lubricated oil and heat exchange between pads, with consideration of different supply methods, was not possible. Recently, such an analysis can be carried out with the use of Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) software. In this paper, an example of the results of the computational analysis of the influence of selected supplying methods on bearing characteristics are presented.<br/><br/>
