CONCEPT OF WATER CONSUMPTION IN AYURVEDA – A REVIEW

Abstract

Water is one of the most essential nutrients for health. Though it is consumable basic need of body; people are unaware of consumption of water with respect to their eating fashion. Different beliefs are there regarding way of drinking of water. There is a common thought that excess consumption of water is not harmful to health; in the same belief people consumes water irrespective of urge and time. Different modes, ways and style of drinking water are easily seen today. Moods and modes of such practice are as follows, use of different utensils for storage, drinking plenty of water by empty stomach early in morning, habitual drinking of water prior to lunch or dinner, or an hour after eating, having multiple sips after having a look on utensil irrespective of thirst, at the time of sleep. There are many more patterns by which people consume huge amount of water irrespective of urge. Besides this; drinking of excessive cool water or excess amount of hot water, such picture is commonly seen. All the patterns which have been described above gives rise to vitiation of Agni resulting in different morbidities. Detailed description regarding water is available in different respects such as its arrival on earth, reservoir, properties of water as per incidence of rain, according to season. Detailed explanation regarding efficiency and harmful effects with reference to its excess amount, hot or coldness, timely consumption, use according to condition of Dosha and disease has been described deliberately in detail in order to make aware regarding its better or bad outcomes. Consumption of water irrespective and against advice of Ayurveda results in Agnidushti. Such practice is called as Vidhirahit Ambupaana which is a main cause of much morbidity. This article has enlightened on water, its different properties according to different physical status and its healthy and non healthy effects on an individual.
