CONCEPT SEASONS IN THE LINGUISTIC WORLD-IMAGE OF PEARL BUCK (BASED ON THE NOVEL “THE GOOD EARTH”)
Journal Title: Записки з романо-германської філології - Year 2018, Vol 2, Issue
Abstract
The article is dedicated to the study of the concept SEASONS in the linguistic world-image of Pearl Buck based on the novel “The Good Earth”. In this work the main features of the wordrepresentatives of the concept under study were identified: SPRING, SUMMER, AUTUMN and WINTER. Pearl Buck used all four word-representatives in her work. The realization of these words in the text exceeded the semantic scope of their vocabulary definitions. In addition to them, the concept can include the expression in season, which has acquired a fundamental meaning for understanding the main idea of the author. The concept SEASONS is considered a linguistic cultural concept, since it possesses all its features: heterogeneity, metaphoricalness and it is fixed in the system of the language. Through the description of life and worldview of the protagonist – the peasant Van Lun – the three components of the linguistic cultural concept SEASONS are revealed: value, figurative and conceptual. By identifying language means objectifying the concept we are exploring and describing the semantics of these units, we model the content of the linguistic cultural concept SEASONS as a global thinking unit in its national, social and territorial identity. The concept under consideration emphasizes the idea of cyclical human life, a change in the stages of formation, and reflects faith in the continuity of life. In the artistic picture of the world of Pearl Buck her individual author’s modality manifests itself, which allows the reader to feel the preferences of the writer. The author expresses the attitude of the Chinese peasants to the seasons and shows the importance of the seasons in the daily life of the villagers. Against this background climatic, aesthetic, psychological and spatial views of the author that are associated with the seasons are revealed. These ideas are used by the author to depict the life, culture and lifestyle of certain segments of the population, creating a fragment of an ethnic cultural picture of the world.
