CONDITIONING OF YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN SWIMMING IN WARSAW

Abstract

Anyone can practice swimming, regardless of age or health. The benefits it brings to human psychological and physical development leads to spread of this form recreation in the society. However, knowledge of the disposition of participation in this discipline is vital. Therefore, the purpose of work is to evaluate the relationships existing between the Warsaw youth participation in swimming and the socio-demographic factors.Questionnaire surveys covered 2104 randomly selected students. The relationship between swimming and gender, BMI, type of school, level of physical activity, participation in tourism and recreation, was assessed using log-linear analysis. Differences between categories of variables were analyzed using Chi 2 test.Very few practice competitive swimming – mostly high school students (1.2%) and II year students (1%). In the case of recreational swimming (35%), students are among the most active (II year – 43% and fourth – 37%). Among the variables examined, only BMI of the respondents shows no co-relationship with their participation in swimming. Other variables like gender (χ 2 partial = 11.8; p = 0.001), stage of education (χ 2 partial = 22.4; p = 0.000), their level of physical (χ 2 partial = 6.9; p = 0.032) and tourist (χ 2 partial = 26.7; p = 0.000) activity and participation in leisure activities (χ 2 partial = 113.7; p = 0.000) are among the factors significantly associated with swimming.It is becoming increasingly more intense running intervention programs in educational institutions, and further identification of dispositions.
