Abstract

Cultural capital, introduced by Bourdieu, consists of ‘’personal knowledge, talent, taste, educational forms and their advantages.’’ (Misci Kip, 2010: 28). It is observed in this study that cultural capital plays a central role in appointment of a conductor for a choir of traditional Turkish art music fort he candidate, acquiring power, status and maintenance of status, eliminating new candidates and successfull performance of conducting the choir. Firstly, we try to understand how conductors are positioned by both themselves and audiences using the concepts of cultural capital and habitus. We also use concepts such as social trajectory, illusio and doxa. Furthermore, we try to explain how conductors acquire various behaviours and trends within the field and what kind of trends are somatified by using the concept of habitus. Finally, we try to show how somatified cultural capital and habitus of conductors shape their discourse, musical interpretation and education, and their method and techniques of conducting. The ethnographic data of this study is based on our field work, consist of observations and interviews for 20 amateur choirs among 208 detected by the time, 2016.
