CONSTITUTING OF TOP LAYERS OF ENHANCED SERVICE PROPERTIES BY BURNISHING WORKING
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2010, Vol 234, Issue 6
Abstract
The process of constituting top layers by pressure rolling burnishing was discussed. Any surface irregularities left after the preceding working are permanently deformed, and a new structure of irregularities forms with distances between irregularities being close to the burnishing feed ratę, which is determined by the kinematics of the burnishing process. By using tools with different shapes, or by changing the working parameters, a different degree of irregularity deformation can be achieved. When analyzing the course of the burnishing working process it can be noticed that the flow of material can lead, at sufficiently high pressures, to the formation of a wave of materiał piled up in front of the burnishing element on the surface being worked, both in the axial and the circumferential directions. Depending on the needs, it is possible to achieve either partial deformation of irregularities, which occurs in the case, where the burnishing element has a considerable profile radius and is not able to create pressures necessary for the complete deformation of the irregularities (some deformed irregularities after the working preceding burnishing remain on the surface), or the complete deformation, when the burnishing element exerts pressures in the burnishing zone high enough for the irregularities to be totally deformed, and a new irregularity structure is formed, being dependent on the parameters of the process being conducted. The burnishing process enables relatively simple controlling of the parameters of the top layer state, leading to producing surfaces of expected service properties.
