Constructed Languages as an Object of Study in Contemporary Interlinguistics

Journal Title: Biuletyn Polskiego Towarzystwa Językoznawczego - Year 2016, Vol 0, Issue 72

Abstract

The aim of the article is to discuss the usefulness of constructed languages and to provide their quantitative description in a historical perspective, as well as to present the role of interlinguistics. An artificial language is understood as a sign system constructed by an individual or a group of people with a particular purpose and arbitrarily defined functions. Artificial languages are created for socio-computational purposes. Interlinguistics is seen as a rapidly growing sub-discipline in linguistics, dealing with diverse aspects of interlingual communication. Being a sub-discipline of other sciences, it achieves methodological autonomy in the field of theoretical and practical language design. An increase in the number of formally and functionally diverse linguistic projects can be observed, with over 1,000 projects at the moment.
