CONSTRUCTION OF ENGLISH MULTIMODAL TEXTS: EXPERIMENTAL TENDENCIES OR NEW VISION OF WRITTEN INTERACTION

Abstract

This article is devoted to the analysis of English-language multimodal texts. Their structure and semantic peculiarities have been elucidated in detail. Modern English texts include a variety of non-verbal and paralinguistic semiotic resources that are designed not only to present textual material in a new way, but also to transform established strategies for reading them, taking into account all the formational and content-related devices which are used in the process of creating them. Taking into account specific textual samples, a demonstration is given of the most recent patterns in the design of texts which are formed by combining verbal and non-verbal means. Following from this, both the producers and the recipients of texts must use different strategies both for representing the material and for reading it. The diversity of options for positioning the structural elements facilitates the selection of the most appropriate tactic for the reader. On the basis of the illustrative material which was obtained, it was possible to demonstrate that the most common strategies involve step-by-step branching, stratification, and the inseparability of verbal and visual components. The branching strategy makes possible a step-by-step perception of the material which is conveyed, and is thus the one that enables the reader to understand a text much more quickly, thanks to the enhanced method of presenting it. However, the sequential pattern of the presentation cannot always be readily understood. For this reason, some ambiguity may develop when these expressive strategies are utilized, the choice of initial and subsequent steps depending on the recipient. This means that those who create texts on this basis cannot be certain that their potential readers will approach the reading of the text using exactly the same sequential pattern that was envisioned by the producer.
