CONTEMPORARY GERMAN ADOLESCENT NOVEL (W. HERRNDORF, «TSCHICK»)
Journal Title: Проблеми сучасного літературознавства - Year 2016, Vol 0, Issue 23
Abstract
This study touches upon a promising, yet unexplored field of contemporary literary process - literature for children and young adults. Recent year’s most successful novel for teenagers «Tschick» written by a modern German writer B. Herrndorf is being analyzed. Herrndorf's work is considered as a model of post-modern adolescent novel. The classification of adolescent novel proposed by Carsten Gansel is taken as basis. The analysis shows that different features of genre experiments, consisting in borrowing and modernizing finished genre models and motives, the presence of typical characters and themes relevant to awkward age (the search for identity, outsiderism, friendship and the young love problem), an ironic distance, intertextuality and the play with the reader are characteristic of the post-modern adolescent literature. Different genre models, which became the basis for the author's play with the reader - a classic adolescent novel, a road movie, an educational novel, suspense novel, travelogue and other are being analyzed. A particular style of narration, artificially imitating the youth slang of teenagers is presented as a kind of the author's play with the reader. The phenomenon of double coding, which popularized the novel among a wide readership, is dwelled upon - both young and adult readers. The author concludes that the post-modern version of the adolescent novel demonstrates its secondariness in literature and rather refers to light or middle-literature.=
