Content and Triple Value Analysis of the Qing Dynasty's Praise of Wild Vegetables

Journal Title: Medicine and Philosophy - Year 2024, Vol 45, Issue 24

Abstract

Praise of Wild Vegetables (Yecai Zan), written by the Qing Dynasty scholar Gu Jingxing, is a botanical work focusing on wild vegetables. Influenced by The Compendium of Materia Medica and The Materia Medica for Emergency Relief, it reflects the rudimentary botanical knowledge of ancient China. The text illustrates the transition of wild vegetables from a famine-relief role to their integration into dietary therapy and health maintenance. It also captures the unique mindset and circumstances of loyalist groups during the Ming-Qing transition. Verified benefits of wild vegetables include energy enhancement, anti-aging properties, organ nourishment, vision improvement, and water metabolism regulation. Wild vegetable consumption was particularly popular among Qing literati, offering valuable insights for modern research on the health and wellbeing potential of wild plants.
