Contractors in the Construction Sector and R & D

Abstract

Innovation is widely regarded as one of the key issues of national economic growth and competitiveness. Measurement of innovation and implementing it as a corporate culture is considered necessary as it is one of the key factors of development and to achieve competitive advantage by adopting change. Research on innovation is still in progress and particularly research on measurement of innovations is very limited on Turkish construction industry literature. However, number of Turkish contractors taking place on revenue based international contractor rankings are increasing. It is important to analyse to what extent these firms use innovations, how they reach innovations and the level of integration of the innovation concept in the firm’s corporate strategy. On this account, a research designed to assess Turkish contractors’ innovativeness is conducted. As for the sampling, a professional sectoral organization and an independent foreign establishment’s revenue based contractors list were considered. Research and Development (R&D) activities considered as a driver of innovation, are forming a part of this expansive research. This paper tries to reveal the position of R&D in contractor firms’ innovation activities by two case studies supported by the analysis of the survey. Research shows that a few percentage of firms has a R&D department but firms do conduct R&D activities aside from the presence of an R&D department. However the main source of innovations are external such as colaborations.
