Coping with the COVID-19 Education Crisis: An Investigation of the Experiences and Challenges of Parents in Supporting Distance Learning
Journal Title: Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal - Year 2023, Vol 8, Issue 4
Abstract
This study contributes to the growing body of literature on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on basic education in the Philippines by investigating the experiences and challenges faced by parents in supporting their children's distance learning. The study used a qualitative research approach and semi-structured interviews with ten parents chosen via purposive sampling. The investigation revealed five significant themes: changes in parents' daily routines, an absence of formal teaching training, challenges accessing technological resources, learning with their child, and gratitude for educators and the education sector. The findings underscore the pandemic's considerable impact on the daily lives of parents and their children, as well as the difficulties parents have in assisting their children's learning due to a lack of formal education training and access to technology. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the beneficial results of distant learning, such as deeper and more meaningful interactions between parents and their children, as well as parents' recognition for educators' efforts in responding to the pandemic's challenges. The report finishes with practical recommendations for educators and politicians on how to effectively support families in distress.
