CORRECTION OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS IN CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS

Abstract

The article deals with theoretical analysis of communication peculiarities in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) such as inability to use visual contact, mimic expression, gesticulation for social interaction adjustment adequately; inability to establish peer relationships; lack of social and emotional dependence; lack of common interests in communicating with other people; relative inability to start or maintain a conversation at any level of speech development; inability to reflect; impassive imitation or its complete absence, etc. The article outlines the components of the child's communication skills development assessment: non-verbal communication (first of all – visual contact); verbal communication; interactive attention (interaction timing, the inclusion of another person in the child's activity, some collaborative engagement for partners); flexibility (the ability to change one’s behavior depending on the situation and to switch from one activity to another). Each of the components has 5 developmental levels. The results of the primary diagnostics of the subjects’ communicative skills received by applying experts evaluation and observation method are presented. The analysis of the basic principles of the “Son-Rise Program” for communicative skills correction in children with ASDs is given. The results of their communication skills correction by applying Son-Rise Program are presented. The results of its implementation by analyzing the dynamics of the subjects’ communicative skills are presented. The transition of various components of communication from the lower developmental level to the higher one proves the program effectiveness. Although this dynamics is different for different subjects under the time-line criterion.
