Cranial Nerve Palsies Following Head Injury

Journal Title: Journal of Medical Research and Practice - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 2

Abstract

Trivial head trauma with a Glasgow Coma Scale Score 14/15 that causes a minor head injury can result in Cranial Nerve or nerves (CN) palsies. The same cases of CN palsies may also be associated with severe head trauma. So it is a known occurrence that the CN palsies may appear with a distribution to moderate or severe head injuries. Records of nerve injury in head injury vary in various published literature. Some cases like bilateral abducens paralysis following trauma may be a very rare pathology. Similarly some other delayed manifestation of unilateral sixth (abducens) and seventh (facial) cranial nerve palsies following head injury are rare. The challenges of these studies require us to carry out detailed clinical and neurological examinations study showing us how the brain and bone windows were damaged in our patients. Based on the skull X-Ray findings the workers may distinguish three types of traumatic injury: There may be no lesion, there may be skull base fracture and there may be CT abnormalities- if these are available. These features are needed for us in Zambian hospitals so that our involvement in looking into our patients may show some Zambian CN palsies features also.
