Study of Lipid Profile in Patients with Hypothyroidism
Journal Title: Journal of Medical Research and Practice - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 4
Abstract
This study focuses on to reveal the association between hypothyroidism and lipid profile. It was a case control study carried over for a period of 1 year in tertiary care centre in central India. A total of 200 patients of hypothyroidism and 200 normal patients were studied. T3, T4 and TSH were quantitatively estimated by chemiluminescence (CLIA) method. Serum was estimated on the fully automated biochemistry analyzer using the analyser-specific Roche Kit for total cholesterol, triglycerides and HDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol was calculated by using Friedewald’s formula. Out of 200 patients, 123 patients belong to subclinical hypothyroidism and 77 belong to overt hypothyroidism. Females had higher prevalence consisting of 85% of total cases. In control patients, the mean level of serum cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and Triglycerides were found to be 172.67 ± 14.76, 42.37 ± 6.49, 112.89 ± 18.46, 124.89 ± 26.05 respectively. In subclinical and overt hypothyroid patients, mean level of s. cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides were found to be 275.44 ± 14.49, 39.83 ± 6.76, 152.32 ± 15.29, 187.88 ± 16.69 mg/dl, respectively, and 301.55 ± 20.53, 30.55 ± 7.29, 181.87 ± 20.11, 216.49 ± 20.72, respectively, which shows the significant difference among the mean values of cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglyceride in hypothyroid and control groups. It can be concluded that most patients of hypothyroidism are females belonging to age group of 45–59 years, and hypothyroid patients show dyslipidemic profile so patients with dyslipidemia should be investigated for hypothyroidism.
