CREATIVE WORK OF FOOTBALL FANS – MODERN FOLKLORE?
Journal Title: Слов’янський збірник - Year 2016, Vol 0, Issue 20
Abstract
Purpose. This article is trying to answer the question: does creative work of Polish football fans can be considered as modern folklore? Methodology. To analyze chants of Polish football fans I decided to use the definition of the term „folklore” created by J. Bartmiński and published in his book „Folklore – language – poetics” in 1990, because he distinguishes three defining features of folklore and writes about it in relation to popular (folk) culture. Finding. The creative work of Polish football fans turns out to be folklore, because it is collective and functional, based on direct transmission and it can be easily repeated, it’s anonymous and also builds group identity in opposition to others. Practical values. Considering the creative work of Polish football fans as modern folklore allows us to understand motivations and needs of their subculture. Results. The rivalry distinguishes the creative work of Polish football fans from traditional folklore, because being better than the others is just as important (or even more important) as building group identity.
