Critical reception of John Fowles’ creativity by Ukrainian scientific community

Abstract

The article deals with the views of Ukrainian researchers regarding to the works of a famous English contemporary writer John Fowles. He was an English novelist of international level, critically being positioned between modernism and postmodernism. In our research we study the works of Ukrainian scientists concerning different aspects of John Fowles’ creativity. Some aspects of the English writer’s creativity were studied by Solomiya Pavlychko, who was the first to investigate the novels of the English writer. Scientific interest to creative legacy of John Fowles began to grow after the 2000s. Elena Kozyura investigated John Fowles’s prose as an aspect of postmodern interpretation. Having analyzed the research of O. Kozyura, we agree that the basis of the plot in “The Magus”, “The Collector”, “The French Lieutenant’s Woman” is the combination of game, history and myth. Julia Bumbur studied author’s reflection based on the works of John Fowles. The researcher concludes that the author’s reflection of John Fowles is expressed by allusions, metaphors and reminiscences. In some parts of novels, autoreflection is expressed by author’s indents, which help the reader understand the picture of the world, presented by the author. Also we agree with Yu. Bumbur that experiment lies in the basis of the English writer’s novels. It was revealed that in the critical articles such components of the artistic world as themes and problems; genre and style features; type, heroes and heroine were analyzed. Summing up, it should be noted that the work of the writer’s prose recreated certain literary and cultural innovations.
