Criticizing the Deficiencies of ER Diagram Teaching in Database Books

Abstract
Drawing ER diagram is one of the best methods for abstract representation of system with the aim of semantic modeling of data. Because drawing ER diagram finally leads to database design, if it is drawn correctly, our right view towards environmental data will be ensured, and then it will be a proper design of database required for the system. The aim of the study is criticizing the deficiencies of ER diagram teaching in database books. According to the researcher, the deficiencies that exist in teaching this subject are discussed in two parts. The first section is about distinction of the direct and indirect relationships between system entities and the second part relates to the distinction of the relationship cardinality in a time section and during the time. For every proposed deficiency, some examples and reasons are given. By teaching these two cases, it will be helpful for students to promote their systematic view of data and to distinct the organizational relationships. More importantly, students can draw a more accurate ER diagram and then design a better database for a system.
