Cultural Development and Westernization Efforts of Russia in the First Half of the XVIII'th Century

Abstract

The XVIII century Russia had gone under serious economic, political and cultural transformations. The process of Modernization or Westernization, which was initiated by Peter the Great, and decisions taken in this direction, towards the end of the XVIII century have created a fertile ground for the Enlightenment movement from West. Peter the Great, besides taking decisions of modernization that covered all areas of life, had also chosen the working principle as the basic philosophy of life. All these decisions had changed the social values and the direction of cultural development in Russia. The article is analyzing the transformation process of Archaic Russia into Enlightened Russia. This study also pays attention to personal contribution of XVIII century Russian governors into process of Westernization and Enlightenment.
