Cultural Diversity Management in Enterprises of the Podlasie Region

Abstract

The development of diversity management is caused mainly by the globalization processes. The concept of diversity management has appeared in the HRM fi eld recently – in 1980s in USA and in 1990s in Europe. Although it has American origins it could be easily applied to every place a multicultural organization operates in unless the understanding of diversity is diff erent. The article’s objective is to present opinions of managers working in large and medium-sized enterprises in the Podlasie region on diversity management. Enterprises from the Podlasie region function in a culturally (religiously) diverse environment. Geographical and historical conditions have made the Podlaskie Voivodeship a place of coexistence of various nations and cultures. Research is concerned with perception of diversity management by mangers working on everyday basis with culturally diverse employees. Its aim is to determine the level of their knowledge of its principles and assumptions, discover whether managing diversity is implemented in a company’s structure and fi nd out whether cultural diversity is treated by them as a opportunity or threat.
