Cumplimiento de las normas de bioseguridad. Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos. Hospital Luis Vernaza, 2019

Journal Title: Revista Eugenio Espejo - Year 2019, Vol 13, Issue 2

Abstract

Biosafety standards are operational guidelines that are applied in health institutions in order to prevent occupational accidents and reduce the risk of cross infections. A descriptive, cross-sectional research with a mixed approach was carried out with the entire population (93 professionals of the Intensive Care Unit of the Luis Vernaza Hospital). Theoretical, empirical and statistical methods were used, which guided the steps of the research process. As a technique for data collection, a questionnaire was used to identify compliance to biosafety standards by health professionals in the study context, consisting of open and closed questions, which was designed by the researcher and validated during the research process using the quali-quantitative method of Content Validation, Construction and Reliability by determining Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient (α = 1). The members of the study population bear a part in specific sociodemographic characteristics that favor non-compliance to biosafety standards. Being the lack of training, the overload of care and the low work experience in the ICU considered as drivers of this problem. The ignorance of these regulations is unknown, which causes an insufficient use of personal protective equipment and the handling of short-pointed waste. Insufficient input availability is negatively associated with these results.
