Journal Title: Journal of Evolution of Medical and Dental Sciences - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 13
Abstract
BACKGROUND Turmeric is a spice derived from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa, which is a member of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). In addition to its use as a spice and pigment, Turmeric has been used for centuries in herbal medicines for the treatment of a variety of disorders such as rheumatism, diabetic ulcers, anorexia, cough and sinusitis. Curcumin (Diferuloylmethane) is the main active constituent present in turmeric, responsible for its yellow colour. It has been shown to possess significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic, anti-mutagenic, anticoagulant and anti-infective effects.
