Current views on the dental implant treatment of patients with diabetes mellitus
Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2016, Vol 66, Issue 4
Abstract
Diabetes is a systemic disease affecting people, regardless of their race and their age. Unhealthy lifestyle, lack of physical activity and obesity, in particular, predispose to an elevated risk of this disease. The effects of diabetes can also be manifested in the mouth of the patients suffering from this disease making them much more vulnerable to various types of complications after dental treatment. The aim of this study was to analyse the available research on the impact of diabetes on the implant treatment, which is the current standard therapy not only for edentulous patients, but also for those with a single missing tooth. The appropriate preoperative classification of patients with diabetes and adequate glycemic control can significantly reduce the risk of failure.
