The instrument for occlusal force electronic measurement of our own construction

Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2011, Vol 61, Issue 1

Abstract

Introduction. Occlusal forces, which depend on individual changing values and habitual frequency, are directly determined by the functional efficiency of chewing and indirectly by the biomechanical tissue function within the area of opposing teeth. Thus formulated clinical criterion has served as a basis for the undertaken study. Aim of the study. To develop the method for measuring the real occlusal force released in any selected area of alveolar ridges during cyclic loads of a simulated bite of food in the chewing act.Method. A polymer imitation of a bite of food filled with liquid and connected with a pressure sensor by means of a polymer tube met the required clinical condition of measuring the released occlusal force. The measurement was conducted by means of the electronic MPX 5700DP (Motorola) system integrated with the micromechanical semi-conducting pressure sensor and analogue system providing the calibration of measurement signals. After transformation of signals into a digital recording, the output signals were transmitted from the sensor in real time with the frequency of 1-10 kHz by means of electronic read-out system via USB port and registered by a computer.Results. An initial series of measurements was carried out to test the correctness of the read-out system operation. A special computer programme was developed to analyse and evaluate the metrologically registered measurement signals. This programme allowed us to determine the conditions for defining the characteristics of cyclical changes in occlusal force and its parameters, such as speed, amplitude, frequency and average value of load in a time unit. Conclusion. A practical aim of this study was to design a simple diagnostic and measurement device that could support dentists in their clinical evaluation of the functional efficiency of chewing in natural dentition, as well as in prosthetic reconstruction or after orthodontic treatment.
