Cytological evaluation of benign breast lesions with histopathological correlation at rural setup

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 3

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate diagnostic performance of fine needle aspiration cytology [FNAC] and to evaluate its diagnostic accuracy in diagnosis of benign breast lesions. To analyse the causes of diagnostic errors on FNAC. Methods: The present study included 65 cases presenting with palpable breast lump in the outpatient department of the IIMSR Medical College, Jalna. FNAC was carried out on all of them and the material was studied in the Department of Pathology from January 2017 to August 2017. Females who had diagnosis of benign breast lesion on FNAC were followed up with histopathological evaluation to assess the diagnostic accuracy of FNAC. Results: Out of sixty five benign cases diagnosed on FNAC, sixty three cases were benign, one case of fibrocystic disease had atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) and another case of fibrocystic disease came out to be ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) on histopathological examination suggesting, 96.9℅ diagnostic accuracy of FNAC in diagnosing benign breast lesions. Conclusion: The correlation between cytology and histopathology showed that FNAC is an accurate test in diagnosing and managing benign breast lesions.
