CZESŁAW MIŁOSZ AND LITERARY GENRES

Abstract

The essay describes Czesław Miłosz’s (1911-2004) quest for new literary genres. The poet had «always aspired to a more spacious form» that would combine poetry, prose and elements of drama. Such a target form was expected to be aesthetically heterogeneous, merging the lofty and the ironic, the mundane and the solemn, the comic and the tragic. The author of the essay claims that Miłosz went far beyond the boundaries of traditional literary genres and, trespassing the line of traditional «mode» of describing the world, came up with a unique, original form. The author also suggests that in Miłosz’s lyrical poetry the inexpressible experience of existence is conveyed by means of a transcendental «I» which both uses and contaminates the given literary forms. The «experience of existence» is accessible thanks to the categories that can hardly be described in unequivocal terms: examination, word and imagination (originally understood as: noesis, logos, imaginatio).
