D-serine, a selective glycine/N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor agonist, antagonizes the antidepressant-like effects of magnesium and zinc in mice.
Journal Title: Pharmacological Reports - Year 2008, Vol 60, Issue 6
Abstract
Zinc and magnesium are potent inhibitors of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor complex. Recent data demonstrate that both zinc and magnesium, like other NMDA receptor antagonists, exhibit antidepressant-like activity in rodent screening tests and depression models. In the present study, we investigated the effect of D-serine (agonist for the glycine(B) site of the NMDA receptor complex; 100 nmol/mouse, icv) on magnesium (30 mg/kg, ip)- and zinc (5 mg/kg, ip)-induced activity during a forced swim test (FST) in mice. The antidepressant-like effect observed during FST for both ions was abolished by D-serine co-treatment. The present study indicates that the NMDA receptor complex, especially the glycine(B) site, plays a role in the antidepressant-like activity of magnesium and zinc in the FST in mice.

Oleanolic acid derivative methyl 3,11-dioxoolean-12-en-28-olate targets multidrug resistance related to ABCB1.
Multidrug resistance (MDR) in leukemia patients is a great incentive to the development of new drugs. In a search for potential multidrug resistance modulators we tested a group of oleanolic acid (OA) analogues modified...
NMDA and AMPA receptors are involved in the antidepressant-like activity of tianeptine in the forced swim test in mice.
It is known that tianeptine exhibits antidepressant-like activity. Its influence on the glutamatergic system is also known, but the mechanisms involved in this activity remain to be established. The aim of this study was...
Delta opioid receptors contribute to the cardiorespiratory effects of biphalin in anesthetized rats.
Biphalin expresses almost equal affinity for μ- and δ-opioid receptors. The aim of this study was to delineate a possible role of δ-opioid receptors in the cardio-respiratory effects of systemic injection of biphalin in...
Locomotor activity changes in female adolescent and adult rats during repeated treatment with a cannabinoid or club drug.
Adolescents and young adults of both sexes are the primary consumers of "club" drugs; yet, most of the mechanistic preclinical research in this area has been performed in adult male rodents. The purpose of this study was...
Involvement of adenosine receptor agonists on the development of hypersensitivity to acute dose of morphine during morphine withdrawal period.
In the present study, the involvement of the selective adenosine A(1) (CPA) and A(2A) (CGS 21680) and non-selective adenosine A(1)/A(2A) (NECA) receptor agonists on the development of hypersensitivity to acute morphine i...
