Dalekobieżna obsługa kolejowa planowanego lotniska pod Warszawą – propozycja modelu

Abstract

The initiative to construct a new airport near Warsaw i able to handle growing air traffic in the foreseeable future is the unique opportunity to integrate its passenger terminals with railway network on a scale unprecedented anywhere else. This is due to the planned location of the complex at the intersection of the long-planned HS Lines supposed to become the framework of long distance train service in Poland. Of these lines one partly exists (the CMK) and awaits upgrading, while the rest require construction in completely new alignments. Combination of rail network expansion with the new air hub is capable of providing all-day service to almost all regions of the country (and later some areas also beyond it), without extending intercity train routes, journey times and increasing number of services artificially. Thus, the air-rail integration can take place as an essential addition to the overall process of railway modernization, which should proceed anyway. This article contains a proposal of a preliminary model how to organize long-distance train movements at two stages of possible railway construction, with reference to physical layout of the junction and the airport proper. It should be noted; however, the text does not discuss the problems of local city-airport links.
