Abstract

The Polish–Belarusian border is the outer border of the EU and the place where stations with a 1435 mm and 1520 mm rail gauge have been built. After 1945, military transshipment zones were built within the border stations, for use during the war. These objects were adapted for civil use, after the change of political doctrine in Poland after 1989 and integration with Western structures (EU, NATO). The emergence of an independent Belarusian state after the collapse of the USSR resulted in the necessity of establishing mutual Polish-Belarusian relations. Among the neighbors of Belarus, Poland is the only country that uses a 1435 mm rail gauge, which also implies the need to build a transshipment infrastructure for freight traffic and possibly use a rail gauge change (conventional, automatic) transport in passenger and freight traffic. The relatively high level of transport of goods by Belarus, especially transit, comes from the country’s localization on a major communication way, going from China and Russia to Europe. The main border crossing between Poland and Belarus is Terespol–Brest, followed by Siemianowka–Swislocz and Kuznica Bialostocka–Bruzgi and their main role is freight traffic. The longdistance passenger trains use in fact the Terespol–Brest border crossing and a considerable number of trains are observed there.
