Davant del rei de Suècia: lo irónico de la alta poesía según Quim Monzó

Abstract
The following work is a particular reading of Quim Monzó’s nouvelle entitled Davant del rei de Suècia. Firstly, we will focus on the main character, Amargós, a poet and an ironic, inauthentic being. Secondly, the protagonist’s condition will be interpreted from the perspective of the two mutually exclusive discourses that form his identity: the discourse of a poet and the discourse of a national hero. Th e aim of the present article is to suggest some of the possible interpretations, all of them related by association, given that the nouvelle itself, as the author said, shall not be read as a roman à clef. It ought to be perceived rather as an open matrix which leaves space to many diff erent readings. The academic attitude towards literature and language, as well as the rigid divisions between the fi ne art and the popular culture, are some of the topics that Monzó turns into grotesque.
