DEATH IN THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF ANTIOCHIAN SCHOOL

Abstract

The article is devoted to the concept of death in the Theological Anthropology of the Antiochian School, a Greek-speaking patristic center in Syria. Considering the work of various theologians of this school, whose views are usually studied separately, in a common framework, allows us to define the specific approach of the Antiochian thinkers to the phenomenon of death and the development of their ideas on this topic. Primarily "vertical" views of the Antiochians on life, death and resurrection as God's gifts to a particular person, are later synthesized with classical "horizontal" representations of "natural immortality." At the intersection of these visions Theodore of Mopsuestia introduces an anthropological conception of the “two states”. It becomes a basis for the ethical doctrine of St. John Chrysostome and Theodoret, where the fear of death is viewed as a motive of civilization and as a teacher of freedom. The same ontological basis provides the Antiochian psychotherapy of depression caused by the death of relatives.
