Abstract
The article is devoted to research into communicative aspect of the deformation of phraseological units in realization of the strategy of generation of emotional stress. The problem of determining relevance of the strategy of generation of emotional stress to the English “yellow” press influencing millions of its readers is solved in the article. Special attention is paid to the identification of tactics to realize the strategy of generation of emotional stress. Tactics of shocking, identification on the principle “us – them” (or “we-group – them-group”), evoking sympathy and empathy are considered to be the elements of speech manipulation in the English “yellow” press. The psychological foundation for the tactics of shocking is exploitation of the survival instinct. For the tactics of identification on the principle “us – them” the bipolar linguistic-cultural category “we-group – them-group” is basic. The tactics of evoking sympathy and empathy involves the archetypal opposition “predator – prey.” Examples of the devices of phraseological deformation such as phraseological extended metaphor, phraseological reiteration, double actualization (pun) and phraseological saturation demonstrate the mechanism of realization of tactics aimed for bringing the reader to the state of emotional stress. It is worth pointing out that phraseological units under deformation are combined with lexical and expressive means in the context to verbalize the strategy of generation of emotional stress, preserving their leading part. It should be stressed that semantic-functional approach and discourse analysis are appropriate in study of phraseological deformation as a means of verbalization of speech manipulation in the ranks of the strategy of generation of emotional stress. Influence of the strategy of generation of emotional stress results in creating image of the hostile surrounding world, identifying the enemy, projecting someone’s sufferings on your life evoking reader’s strong negative emotions. In such emotional state he/she becomes a target for manipulation.
