PROPER NAMES AS MEANS OF REALIZATION OF AUTHOR’S INTENSIONS IN POETIC TEXTS

Abstract

The article deals with proper names and their functions in revealing author’s intensions in poetic texts. It is proved that in poetic texts proper names are not only name personas but fulfill the content of such poetic texts semantically and work as stylistic devices; they are one of the causes owing to which not only author’s textual world is created but also his individual style, his ethnic and cultural worldview. Proper names are considered to be key words, which appear in the context of poetic texts and help to analyse and interpretate them. Researched by S. M. Spivak functions of proper names is represented in the article on the case study of poetic texts of not only modern, postmodern authors but also by J. Thomson, J. Swift, R. Burns, S. Browne, W. Blake, that defines diachronic approach to investigation of this phenomenon. Being representatives of author’s intensions, proper names fulfill such functions as textbuilding, defining perspectives, intertextuality, pragmatic orientation to the reader’s perception, causing emotions. In the American poetic texts of 20th century, comparing with previous periods, there are a lot of proper names that have allusive features. They used as stylistic devices, hints, reminiscence to a certain literary text, setting or image and to historical events, expecting readers’ background knowledge, which can recode text’s context. Being in the text one of the main components, proper names actualize author’s modality, prospectivity and pragmatic orientation on reader’s interaction.
