METAPHORICAL MODELS OF THE CONCEPT WAR IN W. CHURCHILL’S HISTORIC AND MEMOIR WORKS

Abstract
The article deals with the problem of conceptual modeling in cognitive linguistics and its representation in contemporary linguistic studios. It also focuses on specific meaning of the concept WAR embodied in W. Churchill’s historic and memoir works. It has been established that the concept of WAR is one of the basic mental constructs of W. Churchill’s historic and memoir works, since all the analyzed memoirs are united by the theme of war: military events are described and analyzed from W. Churchill’s point of view (as a military men, as a member of Parliament, as British Prime-Minister and a political leader). The application of conceptual analysis enabled us to reconstruct cognitive metaphors as well as to build metaphorical models of the concept under the study, and to establish its cognitive features. It has been revealed that the conceptual metaphors that represent the metaphorical model WAR IS THE OBJECT OF NATURE, interpret war in terms of nature and natural elements: the beast, the tiger, the stream, the shower, the vortex, the volcano, the flame, the fire, the storm. The metaphorical model WAR IS ART represents W. Churchill’s conceptualization of war in terms of art: drama, spectacle, game, skill, art. In the context of the study it has also been established that W. Churchill interpreted war in terms of abstract concepts: burden, strain, welter, mistake, curse. In the metaphorical model WAR IS A LIVING BEING, war is represented in the hypostases of a destroyer, a teacher, a wizard. The content of the concept WAR is predetermined by historical period W. Churchill lived and worked, because the era of the XIX century was the era of global confrontation, the era of the struggle between states and social classes. A distinctive feature of W. Churchill’s understanding of war is contrast, which is realized in all metaphorical models.
