DENTAL TERMINOLOGY: NORMALIZATION AND ENGLISH-UKRAINIAN TRANSLATION

Abstract
Translation of dental terminology from English into Ukrainian is a complicated process that requires both thorough linguistic knowledge and deep awareness of dentistry. This complexity often causes numerous mistakes and drawbacks of scientific medical texts in the process of its translation. Thus, the main purpose of the research is a diverse analysis of dental terminology development and functioning in the Ukrainian language. To realize the purpose of the research we use systematic approach and comparative study to learn the translation regularities. We have considered and analyzed problematic aspects in translation and normalization of Ukrainian dental terms at the present stage. Moreover, alternative ways of their solution were outlined. In addition to the abovementioned aspects the concept „term” is considered and important features of terminology translation from English into Ukrainian are set forth as well. As a result we determined the most important ways to normalize the terminology and main translation techniques such as transcoding, calking, direct equivalent translation and explication. The research has an important practical value for foreign students and dentists, for linguists and medical translators.
